How to Find It

Locate the Orion constellation, which is prominent in the winter sky. Look for the three stars that form Orion's Belt (Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka). The Orion Nebula is situated below the belt, just south of the 'Sword' of Orion, visually represented by a line of stars that includes the nebula itself.

Observing Tip

Use a telescope or binoculars to enhance your view of the nebula. A wide-field telescope (8-10 inches in diameter) will allow you to see more details, such as the structure of the nebula and surrounding stars. For astrophotographers, using a camera attached to a telescope can capture stunning images; try taking long exposure images to collect more light from the nebula's faint details.
