How to Find It
To locate Caldwell 49, first find the Great Square of Pegasus, which consists of four bright stars forming a square in the sky. From the northeastern star of the square (Alpha Pegasi), move slightly south and east. Caldwell 49 is located about 5° southeast of Alpha Pegasi, just outside the square's outline.
Observing Tip
When observing Caldwell 49, use a telescope with a minimum aperture of 6 inches for a clearer view of its core and spiral structure. Averted vision can help reveal details that are difficult to see directly. For astrophotography, longer exposures with a moderate ISO setting can capture more of its faint details against the surrounding sky.
