M13, known as the Great Hercules Cluster, is one of the brightest and best-known globular clusters in the northern sky. M13 is best viewed during spring. It reaches its highest point in the sky during the months of May and June, making this the prime time for observations.

How to Find It

To locate M13, first find the constellation Hercules, which can be identified by its distinctive 'keystone' shape. M13 lies slightly north of the keystone's center. Use the stars Epsilon Herculis (5.8 magnitude) and Zeta Herculis (6.8 magnitude) as guides; M13 is located about 1/2 of the way along a line connecting these two stars.

Observing Tip

For the best view, use binoculars or a telescope with at least 4 inches of aperture. Binoculars will show it as a fuzzy patch of light, while telescopes will reveal more individual stars, especially at higher magnifications. For astrophotographers, long exposures can capture the intricate details of M13's stars, but ensure you use proper tracking to avoid star trails.
