How to Find It

M 17 is located in the rich starfields of Sagittarius. To locate it, find the teapot asterism in Sagittarius. M 17 is positioned just to the north of the teapot's spout, slightly eastward. Using a star chart or astronomy app can assist in pinpointing its location accurately.

Observing Tip

For astrophotographers, use a telescope with at least a 4-inch aperture to capture the details of the nebula. A camera with a wide-field lens is ideal. Plan to take longer exposures of several minutes and stack them to reveal the intricate structures of the nebula. Note that M 17's brightness varies, so check local light pollution conditions, and photograph during periods of better sky transparency.
